Linking to Knowledge Base (KB) articles

More like this

This article explains how to generate a "generic" article URL able to redirect users to the latest version available.

How to generate a valid URL

Follow the instructions to create a valid link that will work for all future versions of an article:

1. Navigate to the bottom of the article concerned

2. Select the Copy article URL to clipboard

"Copy article URL to clipboard" button highlighted by using a rectangle

3. A green banner saying "Article URL copied successfully" will pop up at the top of the page

""

4. The format of the link created is as follows:

https://sotonproduction.service-now.com/serviceportal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KBxxxxxxx

The KB number at the end matches the KB number of the article concerned. For example:

  • Article's number: KB0060366
  • URL created: https://sotonproduction.service-now.com/serviceportal?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0060366

By using the KB number format for the link, you and your readers will land on the latest valid version of an article.

What happens when you copy the URL from the browser's address bar

When you open an article from the Service Portal, you will see that the link appearing in the browser's address bar will have the following structure:

https://sotonproduction.service-now.com/serviceportal?id=kb_article_view&sys_kb_id=xxxxxxxxx

Any link that appears in that format (which ends in "sys_kb_id=...") will only work for the current version of an article. When the article is updated, that link will no longer be valid - please do not copy the URL that appears in your browser's address bar.
