An introduction to HPC

High Performance Computing (HPC) harnesses the power of supercomputers (or compute clusters) to solve problems that are too intensive for a standard computer or workstation.

The University’s current HPC facility is known as Iridis. For several years, Iridis has been able to support our researchers by completing highly complex tasks, transforming their research projects, and delivering results.

Accessing HPC

Iridis is available to university staff members, research fellows, postgraduate students as well as undergraduate students.

If you are a staff member, research fellow or postgraduate research student, you can apply for access to the cluster by submitting the Iridis Account Application form.

If you are an undergraduate student or on a post-graduate taught course, you will need to get your supervisor to complete the Lyceum Account Application form for a Lyceum account.

Once your account has been created, you can then proceed to connect to Iridis. Please note, you will need to connect to the University’s VPN.

To understand how to connect to Iridis and for more information, please visit our HPC Community Wiki SharePoint site

Find out more

The HPC Community Wiki SharePoint is a dedicated site accessible to staff and students at the University. It provides documentation on how to access and use Iridis as well as training courses and system announcements.

You will also find the Contact Us page detailing how to request support, what support the HPC team can provide and who is part of the team.

For any hardware purchases, please contact Chris Yorke directly.
