This article shows the list of Random-Access Memory (RAM) and Solid State Drive (SSD) available and the compatibility with computers provided by the University of Southampton. 

Please note:

  • Apple computers cannot be upgraded
  • Suppliers change their prices frequently. Please contact our team for advice and to get confirmation of the price

Before requesting a RAM or SSD upgrade

Specifications check list

Before requesting an upgrade of the RAM / SSD installed on your computer, check the following specifications: 

  1. RAM usage - check in device manager to see how much ram your system is using
  2. CPU usage - this helps you know how the computer's performances are affected

Know how much RAM is installed in your computer

Windows 11

Information about your RAM is also available in the Settings app. Find it as follows:

  1. Open the Start menu
  2. Use the Search field to open Task Manager
  3. Allow the app to make changes to your device
  4. Select the tab Performance
  5. Check the Slots used

    This screen provides information about the performances of a computer used as an example. The image shows that the RAM's slot used are 8 out of 8

Linux

  • Use the command free to find information about the RAM and the swap space (also called virtual memory).
  • Another way to find to know more about your RAM is to open the Settings app then select details or about.

How many sticks of RAM can you order?

RAM

Depending on the computer's hardware configurations, your machine might already use 2 slots of memory.

This means that if you want to upgrade its RAM, you will need to request a pair of RAM sticks - for example, if your computer uses 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) and you want to upgrade it, you will need to order 2 x 16 GB sticks.

Exceptions:

  • Few computers have one slot of memory in use and one free. In these cases, you can order just one stick of memory to upgrade their hardware.
  • In case of faulty sticks of memory you can order the quantity you need to change.

SSD

An SSD upgrade will require replacing the current drive and a fresh Windows install.
