Enabling the Hibernate mode in Windows 10

This article guides you enabling “hibernate” mode on Windows 10 while turning the computer off.

Know more about hibernate option

When you are shutting down your PC, you can choose to:

  • Turn it off completely
  • Make it sleep
  • Hibernate the PC

Hibernate uses less power than sleep. When you turn on the PC again, you will be back to where you left off – even if this option is not as fast as the sleep mode.

Use hibernation when you know that:

  1. You will not use your laptop or tablet for an extended period of time
  2. You could not charge the battery during that time.

To hibernate your PC

  1. Select Start
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Choose System
  4. Select Power & sleep
  5. Select Additional power settings
  6. Choose the option What the power buttons do
  7. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Please note: If you are using a desktop or laptop managed by iSolutions, you might not be able to change these settings. In this case, you will see a banner saying “Some settings are managed by your system administrator”.
  8. Check the "Hibernate" box
  9. Select the button Save changes

The next time you open the "Start menu" and select the "Power button", you will see that “Hibernate” is now available from the menu.

Press the power button to get access to the session again.

Changing your power buttons, lid and shutdown settings

You can change the power button and the shutdown settings as follow:

  1. Select Start
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Choose System
  4. Select Power & sleep
  5. Select Additional power settings
  6. Choose the option What the power buttons do
  7. Go to the section Power and sleep buttons and lid settings
  8. Select the right one for you between: “Do nothing”, “Sleep”, “Hibernate”, “Shut down”
  9. If you want “Hibernate” to appear in Power menu, check the box under the Shutdown settings list.
