How to create desktop shortcuts on Windows 

This article guides you on creating shortcuts to an application, to re-synchronise your device or to perform a Microsoft Office repair using Windows.

It also explains how to repair any missing icons or direct links to programs from your desktop.

Option 1: Create a shortcut from your application

You can create a shortcut from your application in 2 ways:

  1. By pinning it to your taskbar
  2. By dragging and dropping it from the Start menu

Pinning your application

To pin the application to your taskbar, please:

1. Open a file from the application you wish to re-install (for example a Word file).

2. Go to the application icon on the taskbar

3. Right-click on the application icon (for example Word)

4. Select the option “Pin to taskbar

You can do this for all your applications, including Excel, Powerpoint, and Word.

Pinning an Office 365 application from office.com

You can pin any Office 365 application from the browser version of Microsoft 365. To do that:

1. Go to office.com

2. Open the application you want to pin

3. Go to the tab and right-click on it

4. Select the option “Pin tab

Dragging and dropping from the Start menu

1. Open the Start menu

2. Scroll the list of applications until you find the right one

3. Drag and drop the icon on your desktop

Option 2: Re-synchronise your device

To ensure that you have the latest operating system software, updates, and security patches please ensure that you Re-Sync your device (especially if you work off line or remotely for periods of time).

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Go to the Start menu

2. Select Settings (the cog)

3. Go to Accounts

4. Select Access work or school

5. Click Connect to University of Southampton Azure AD

6. Click the sync icon

Option 3: Perform a Microsoft Office repair

Follow this procedure if you have lost all your Microsoft Office applications. By doing this, you will add all your Office applications to your Start menu and taskbar / desktop.

This instructions are for users with administrator access. If you are unable to do this, please contact Serviceline.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Go the File Explorer field and type Control Panel

2. Select Programs

3. Select Programs and features

4. Highlight Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise

5. Select the button Change (you can find it on the top of the window).  Windows might ask you permission for the app to make changes to the device.

6. Select Quick Repair and the button Repair to allow the process to complete
