Connecting your devices to the internet network in the Halls of Residence
This article gives you an overview of the Network Refresh project and explains what to do if the network asks you to select a certificate when your device is plugged into a wired network outlet.
Please note: if you are connected to eduroam, you will not see the authentication prompt described in the article.
We are in the process of upgrading the University’s IT network through the Network Refresh project; delivering a secure, efficient, high-performing network with world-leading Wi-Fi.
The upgraded network brings a host of benefits to support all our work and study, including higher bandwidth, quicker downloads, smoother streaming, improved security, the new standard Wi-Fi 7 and much more – as explained in this short video.
To find out more about the Network Refresh, please see our SharePoint site which contains many Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
If you have any further questions, please contact the project team.

To use the wired network and be able to access any webpage, you need to register your device in the University’s Network Registration Portal.
How to register a device:
Please note: if you are connected to the University Wi-Fi (eduroam), you will not need to register your device.
---
When a device is plugged into a network outlet, some users may see a pop-up asking for login details before they can connect:
This occurs because a security feature called 802.1x is enabled, and certain devices are set up to respond to it automatically.
After a few seconds, the system will automatically switch to the normal connection method (based on the device’s registration). You don’t need to take any action.
If the login prompt appears again, simply close the window by selecting the Cancel button. Please do not select any option from the drop-down menu and try to access the network with your university credentials.
Your connection should then continue to work as usual.
If you select the OK button by mistake, the window will appear again asking you to authenticate. To close it and get the connection, select the Cancel button.
Your connection should then continue to work as usual.
