How to connect mobiles and tablets to eduroam Wi-Fi service

You can connect your phone or tablet to eduroam using your University email and your password

eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam works across all our campuses and in the Halls of Residence. 

All staff and students can connect to eduroam and if you are on the go across campus, your Wi-Fi connection will move with you. If you lose connection between sites, you will automatically be reconnected as soon as you get back in range.

Please follow this article to connect your laptop to eduroam. You can also use the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool. Please follow the instructions on their website for this option.

 

How to connect your Android device

  1. Turn on the Wi-Fi on your device

  2. Select the eduroam network. If it is not listed then you are not near an eduroam wireless point and need to move to another location (more central University location).

    ""

  3. Complete the connection configuration as follow:
    1. EAP method: PEAP
      b. Identity: enter your University username followed by @soton.ac.uk (for example: ab1c23@soton.ac.uk)
      c. Password: enter your University password
      d. CA certificate: select the option Don’t validate.
      ""

      If your device it not showing the option 'Don't validate', please:
      1. Select the option System certificates,
      2. Set the domain to be soton.ac.uk
      3. Leave the field 'Anonymous identity' blank
  4. Select Connect

You will now be connected to the eduroam wireless network. You should not need to re-enter your details until your iSolutions password is changed.

How to connect your iPhone / iPad

  1. Turn on your Wi-Fi
  2. Go to Settings and choose Wi-Fi
  3. Select the eduroam network. If it is not listed then you are not near an eduroam wireless point and need to move to another location (more central University location).

  4. Type in your University username followed by @soton.ac.uk, as for example: ab1c23@soton.ac.uk)

    ""

  5. Type in your University password
  6. Press Join
  7. Then select Trust on the certificate prompt

You will now be connected to the eduroam wireless network. You should not need to re-enter your details until your iSolutions password is changed.

How to connect your Google Pixel device

  1. Turn on your Wi-Fi
  2. Select the eduroam network. If it is not listed then you are not near an eduroam wireless point and need to move to another location (more central University location).
  3. Complete the connection configuration as follow:
    1. EAP method: select PEAP
    2. Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPV2
    3. CA certificate: select the option Use system certificates
      ""
    4. Online Certificate Status: Do not verify
      ""
    5. Domain: enter soton.ac.uk
    6. Identity: enter your University username followed by @soton.ac.uk (for example: ab1c23@soton.ac.uk)
    7. Anonymous identity: enter your University username followed by @soton.ac.uk (for example: ab1c23@soton.ac.uk)
      c. Password: enter your University password


  4. Select Connect

You will now be connected to the eduroam wireless network. You should not need to re-enter your details until your iSolutions password is changed.

Connecting using ChromeOS on Chromebooks

Connecting to eduroam

  1. At the bottom right, select the time
  2. Select Not connected.
    Note: If you see your Wi-Fi network name and a signal strength, your Chromebook is already connected to Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn on Wi-Fi. Your Chromebook will automatically look for available networks and show them to you in a list.
  4. Select the eduroam network. If it is not listed then you are not near an eduroam wireless point and need to move to another location (more central University location).
  5. Complete the connection configuration as follows:
    1. EAP method: PEAP
    2. EAP Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2
    3. Identity: Enter your university email as username@soton.ac.uk (for example: ab1c22@soton.ac.uk)
    4. Password: Your IT account password
  6. Tick the Save identity and password option 
  7. Domain suffix match: radius.soton.ac.uk
  8. Select Connect

You will now be connected to the eduroam wireless network. You should not need to re-enter your details until your iSolutions password is changed.

Common issues while connecting to eduroam

Losing your connection to eduroam

If you lose your connection to eduroam, please follow the guidance below to re-connect:

1. Select Settings 

2. Select your connections / networks

3. Select Wi-Fi

4. "Forget" the eduroam connection by doing:

  1.  Select the eduroam network
  2.  Select More (an icon with three dots in column)
  3. Select Forget

Common issues

How to "Forget" eduroam network and reconnect

If you lose your connection to eduroam, please follow the guidance below to reconnect:

1. Select Settings 

2. Select Connections / networks

3.Select Wi-Fi

4. ‘Forget’ the eduroam connection by taking the following actions:

Android users:

  1. Go to the eduroam network
  2. Select the settings icon (a cog / gear)
  3. The click on the Forget icon (a bin) at the bottom of the screen

iOS users:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select Wi-Fi
  3. Select the eduroam
  4. Select Forget This Network

Chromebook users:

  1. Select the eduroam network
  2. Select More (an icon with three dots in column)
  3. Select Forget'

Google Pixel users:

  1. Go to the eduroam network
  2. Select the settings icon (a cog / gear)
  3. The click on the Forget icon (a bin) at the bottom of the screen

5. Wait a few moments, reconnect and re-enter your University email (abc1d23@soton.ac.uk) and password.

 

eduroam keeps disconnecting or you cannot access the internet once connected

Turn off the "Private DNS mode" on Android and Google Pixel mobiles

  1. Tap on the Settings icon on your device
  2. Tap on Connections (or Network & Internet
  3. Scroll down and select More Connection Settings (or Advanced) to show more options
  4. Select Private DNS
  5. From here, change "Private DNS Mode" from Automatic to Off

Disable MAC randomization on Android and iOS

There is a further setting for connecting devices to wireless networks allowing the device to use either a Randomized MAC Address or the Phone Address.

When you move across the campus your device will be often changing the Wireless Access Point (WAP) that it connects to. To avoid the likelihood that this interferes with uninterrupted usage, it is best to set the device to use the Phone Address.

Step-by-step instructions for Android:

  1. Tap on the Settings icon on your device
  2. Tap on Connections 
  3. Tap on Wi-Fi
  4. Tap on the settings icon (a gear) close to the eduroam network 
  5. Select the button View more (or Advanced)
  6. Scroll down to the section MAC address type
  7. Tap on it and select Phone MAC

Step-by-step instructions for iOS:

  1. Tap on the Settings icon on your device
  2. From the Settings main menu, tap on Wi-Fi
  3. Tap on the eduroam network connection
  4. Unlock the option Private Wi-Fi address that appears just above your Wi-Fi address 

 

What to do if you are from another institution

If you have connected to eduroam at another institution before moving here, you may have to ‘forget your connection’ before trying to connect again to the University of Southampton’s network. 

 

Generic instructions

  • Visit https://cat.eduroam.org/
  • Search for University of Southampton. You will need access to an alternative network connection (eg: 3/4/5G) to complete this step.
  • Download and install the profile relevant to your device/operating system
