Accessing databases through MySQL Workbench

This article guides you on accessing data and databases through MySQL Workbench.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1 – Install Workbench

Installing the application on a university-owned computer

  1. Open the Software Center through the shortcut on your desktop
  2. Search for 'MySQL' or 'Workbench'
  3. Double-click the icon
  4. Select the Install button 

Installing the application on a non university-owned computer

  1. Open the page MySQL Workbench installer download 
  2.  Download the Windows (x86, 32-bit), MSI Installer (mysql-installer-community-8.0.43.0.msi) 
  3. Launch the installer 
  4. Follow the instructions

Step 2 – Manage your connection

  1. Open Workbench
  2. Create a new connection as follows:
    1. Choose the Database tab in the top menu
    2. Choose Manage connections from the drop-down menu 
      ""
    3. You will see the Manage Server Connection window

    4.  Fill the form adding the following information:
      1. Connection name
      2. Connection Method: Standard (TCP/IP)
      3. Hostname: srvxxx.soton.ac.uk
      4. Port: 3306
      5. Username: the username you have been assigned
        ""
    5. Select the Store in vault button to enter the password
    6. You will see the Store Password to Connection window. Now enter the password you have been assigned
      ""
    7. Select OK to Store Password to Connection window
    8. Select the Test the connection button
      ""
    9. Select the Close button

Step 3 – Access the database

  1. On the dashboard, select the database you want to open:

  2. The database is available for any requests:
