Downloading and installing NVivo

This article guides you on downloading and installing NVivo 14 on university-owned computer and personal devices.

NVivo R1 can be installed on teaching workstations by following the instructions published in the page "NVivo R1 version on the Common Learning Space (CLS) Workstations".

NVivo is available on all Common Learning Space workstations.

 

Overview of NVivo

NVivo is a qualitative data analysis (QDA) computer software package produced by Lumivero. NVivo helps qualitative researchers to organize, analyse and find insights in unstructured or qualitative data like interviews, open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media and web content, where deep levels of analysis on small or large volumes of data are required.

Please note:

  • NVivo 14 is the latest version of the software for research work
  • NVivo R1 is the version installed on teaching workstations

How to download NVivo 14 for the first time

You can download the installer directly from the supplier or from the University of Southampton Software Download Service. 

Downloading the installer from the supplier 

To download the latest version of NVivo please follow the instructions below:

1. Open the Lumiero / NVivo portal

2. Log in or create your account using the your university username followed by @soton.ac.uk (for example: ab1c23@soton.ac.uk)

Make sure you read the terms and conditions before signing up for an account.
 
3. Once you have created your myNVivo account, open the web page MyLumivero

4. Enter the enterprise license key

5. Select the Submit button

6. Select the version for Windows or Apple Mac

7. The installer will then be downloaded to your machine.

 

Downloading the installer from the University of Southampton Software Download Service

  1. Open the Software Center page Nvivo 14 latest version available for research
  2. Use the Download button to download the installer version for Windows (NVivo.x64.exe) or Apple Mac (NVivo14.dmg)

Installing NVivo 14 for the first time

1. Locate and double-click the installer downloaded to your machine

2. Double-click it to begin the installation

3. Select your preferred language

4. A new welcome page will appear. Select Next

5. On the next window, read and agree to the license conditions

6. Select Next to continue

7. We recommend using the default folder and tick the option to create a desktop shortcut. Select Next to continue

""

8. Select the supplementary Add-0n for Chrome if required. Select Next to continue the procedure

9. Select Install

10. The software will now install. A progression bar will appear in the middle of the screen:

11. At the end of the process you will see a confirmation screen saying that you can close the NVivo installer

12. Tick the option “Launch NVivo” and select the button Finish. Nvivo will be launched
 
13. The first time you run the application you will see a screen showing the following options:

  • "Log into myNVivo"
  • "or provide enterprise key to activate"

12. Select the option or provide enterprise key to activate

13. Fill in the activate key

14. Read and agree to the license terms. 

15. Select Next

16. On the next display, fill in the required fields (marked with a *)

17. Select the Activate button

18. You should see a screen saying "Your licence has now been activated"

18. Select OK

19. NVivo will restart and you should be able to access it as normal.

Renewing your NVivo license

If you need to renew an existing NVivo installation please follow the instructions below:

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet
  2. Open NVivo
  3. Close any NVivo projects you have open
  4. Select the File tab
  5. Select Product info
  6. Select Manage License
  7. Select Deactivate License
  8. Restart NVivo
  9. Most likely you are still logged in with the profile you were logged in with before deactivition:
    • If the license you want to use is in an account you have access to under this profile, continue below to activate.
    • If the license you want to use belongs to an account under another profile
      1. Log out of myNVivo
      2. Start NVivo again
      3. Log in with the profile you want to use.
  10. Enter the new license key in the Extend License dialogue box
  11. Select OK
  12. In the dropdown, select the account with the license that you want to use and select Activate.
    (If you have logged in with a new profile, there may not be a choice of accounts—in this case just click Activate)

Activation is automatic.

Deactivate NVivo

You may want to deactivate the NVivo license on a particular computer. For example, if you get a new computer then you should deactivate the NVivo license on the old computer before installing and activating on the new one.

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the internet
  2. Open NVivo
  3. Close any NVivo projects you have open
  4. Now select the following buttons:
    1. File tab
    2. Product Info
    3. Manage License
    4. Deactivate License
  5. Confirm deactivation
  6. Close NVivo.
