How to update your laptop log in password on university Windows laptops

If you reset your university password and are working on a university computer away from campus you will find that you many have lost access to outlook and network drives such as the J drive as well as your updated password not working to log into the computer and you will have to use your old password.


Please use the below steps to update the log in password for your laptop.


  • Ensure you are connected to the Global Protect VPN with your account and the updated password.

Instructions on setting up the Global Protect VPN can be found at: https://knowledgenow.soton.ac.uk/Articles/KB0011610


  • Copy and Paste the following into ‘Type here to search’ or Run and press enter

C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:soton\%username% "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"


  • In the box that appears, enter new password and press enter


  • Restart your computer


  • Log into the computer with your account using your updated password
