How to update your laptop login password on university-own laptops

This article explains how to update the password of your university-owned laptop.

Instructions for Windows users

1. Ensure you are connected to the university Virtual Private Network (VPN) with your account and the updated password.

2. Open the Run screen by doing one of the following actions:

  • Press Command (the key with the Windows icon)+R 
    or
  • From the search field in the Taskbar, enter Run and select Open

3. Copy and Paste the following command: C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /user:soton\%username% "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

4. In the box that appears

  1. Enter your new password
  2. Press enter

5. Restart your computer

6. Log into the computer with your account using your updated password

Instructions for Apple users

1. From the menu bar, select Apple menu in the top-left corner

2. Select System Settings...

3. Select Users & Groups in the sidebar. You might need to scroll down to see this option

4. Click the Info button  ""  next to your username on the right

5. Select Change

6. Enter your current password in the Old Password field

7. Enter your new password in the New Password field

8. Enter your new password in the Verify field

9. Enter a hint to help you remember the password. The hint appears if:

  • You enter the wrong password 3 consecutive times
  • You click the question mark in the password field in the login window

10. Select Change Password

Important note

If you reset your university password and are working away from campus, you might lose access to:

  • Outlook
  • Network drives such as the J:Drive

This might happen because Outlook or the drivers have not picked up the password change properly. In this case:

  • You can to sign in again with your old password
  • The system should update the password in the following 24 hours 

If the process does not work after 24 hours, contact iSolutions.
