How do I access University IT services from an NHS/UHS computer?

NHS staff at various locations, including University Hospital Southampton (UHS) carry out teaching for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and as such are required to access University IT services including Blackboard and eAssignment.

A number of NHS Trusts, including University Hospital Southampton (Southampton General Hospital, Princess Anne Hospital), are still running old versions of Internet Explorer (IE8) on their computers because a number of NHS applications will only work on IE8.

As a result, some University IT services may not be accessible or work correctly with older versions of web browsers on some NHS computers as they (the browsers) are not capable of supporting the underlying technology of some IT services.

There is a workaround for this issue, and that is to use a different browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox.

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) IM&T (IT) Department have agreed that Google Chrome can be installed on UHS computers as an alternative to Internet Explorer 8.    If staff require Chrome to be installed, UHS IM&T (IT Department) can be contacted on extn. 6000 or itservicedesk@uhs.nhs.uk quoting the asset number of the computer.

For staff based at other NHS Trusts/sites, they are advised to the contact their local IT department.
